EXPERIENCE AT THE NATIONAL CENTER FOR THE PREVENTION OF CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT HAS SHOWN THAT OPERATING A A 24-HOUR CRISIS NURSERY FOR ABUSED CHILDREN IS FEASIBLE AND PROFITABLE TO THE CHILDREN AND THEIR PARENTS.
Abstract
THE CRISIS CENTER PROVIDES A SAFE ENVIRONMENT FOR THE CHILD AT A TIME WHEN THE CHANCES OF PHYSICAL ABUSE ARE GREAT IF HE WERE TO REMAIN WITH HIS PARENTS. ABUSIVE PARENTS CAN LEARN TO ACCEPT AND USE HELP FROM AN OUTSIDE AGENCY, TO ANTICIPATE THOSE STRESSFUL TIMES WHEN IT IS IN THE CHILD'S BEST INTERESTS TO BE BRIEFLY SEPARATED, AND TO ALLOW THEIR CHILD TO RECEIVE NURTURANCE AND CARE FROM ADULTS OUTSIDE THE NUCLEAR FAMILY. MORE THAN JUST A RESPITE CENTER, THE CRISIS NURSERY ALSO DEALS WITH THE PSYCHOLOGICAL STRESSES OF THE CHILD AT THE TIME OF THE CRISIS AND IS RESPONSIBLE FOR RECOGNIZING, IDENTIFYING, AND HAVING TREATED MEDICAL AND DEVELOPMENTAL PROBLEMS OF THE CHILD....ELW
