This update from the National Institute of Corrections (NIC) discusses NIC's first-ever virtual conference.
Abstract
This update discusses the first-ever virtual conference from the National Institute of Corrections, scheduled to be held in June 2013. The topics covered at the conference will include mental health, sentencing, a review of successful reentry programs, Thinking for a Change, and a look at the challenges of reentry and transforming corrections culture. The idea for a virtual conference was developed for a number of reasons: the limited ability of government agencies to develop and deliver effective training for a broad array of stakeholders, the potential for disparate groups to come together in a conference setting, and the opportunity for staff members who work evening shift to attend the conference. Virtual conferences are conducted entirely online allowing participants to join in using a variety of electronic devices. The NIC's virtual conference will include both live and recorded sessions. During the recorded sessions, participants will be able to enter an online discussion area to ask questions and make comments. The main topic of the June 2013 conference will be the complexities of successful reentry programming. 2 endnotes
