THE ACTIVITIES OF TWO VOLUNTEER GROUPS IN THE CANADIAN CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM ARE DESCRIBED - ARCAD (ASSOCIATION OF CULTURAL ENCOUNTERS WITH INMATES) AND 'CINE-CRIMINOLOGIE' (A VOLUNTEER-INMATE FILM DISCUSSION GROUP).
Abstract
BOTH PROGRAMS ARE BASED ON HAVING VOLUNTEERS AND INMATES INTERACT AS SOCIAL OR CULTURAL EQUALS AND PROVIDE SERVICES NOT OTHERWISE AVAILABLE IN PRISON IN AN EFFORT TO MAKE IT EASIER FOR THE INMATE TO 'DO HIS TIME'. ARCAD FOCUSES ON PROMOTING 'REAL' INTERACTION BETWEEN INMATES AND MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY THROUGH JOINT CULTURAL EVENTS (PARTIES, SHOWS, YOGA CLASSES, THEATER GROUPS, FILM CLUBS, AND DISCUSSION GROUPS). ITS OTHER MAIN THRUST IS PUBLIC EDUCATION AS TO PRISON LIFE AND WHAT IT ACTUALLY MEANS TO SERVE A PRISON SENTENCE, THROUGH TEACH-INS AND INMATE-VOLUNTEER LECTURES AND PRESENTATIONS. ONE OF ARCAD'S SPECIAL PROGRAMS, 'CINE-CRIMINOLOGIE' (FILM CRIMINOLOGY), UTILIZES FILM SITUATIONS - TO PROMOTE INMATE DISCUSSON AND ANALYSIS OF THEIR OWN SITUATIONS. AN INFORMAL TYPE OF PSYCHOTHERAPY, THIS PROGRAM CHOSE FILMS BASED ON WHAT WOULD BE AVAILABLE TO THE INMATE IF HE WERE OUT IN THE COMMUNITY. ONE DAY A WEEK (9:30 TO 3:45) THE 15-GROUP MEMBERS GATHER TO VIEW AND THEN DISCUSS THE FILM. --IN FRENCH...ELW
