These 27 papers presented at a 1988 conference examine past and current correctional trends and issues and explore needs and options for the future.
Abstract
Individual papers focus on the development of prisoners' rights in the last 20 years, the changing roles of professional guards, current issues in corrections policy and management, and the use of participatory management in prisons. Additional papers examine the specific needs of Aboriginal (Koorie) prisoners, the future of parole, alternative forms of grievance procedures for prisoners, and current corrections research. Further papers discuss parole and recidivism, the juvenile justice system and juvenile corrections, the needs and programs for female prisoners, design issues related to prison security, and prison health needs and issues. Other papers describe a pilot treatment program for sex offenders, problems involving service delivery for mentally ill offenders, the need for professional standards in community-based corrections, the nature and use of home detention, news media coverage of corrections issues, the use of victim impact statements in sentencing, and the role of restitution programs.
