CURRENT TRENDS IN CORRECTIONAL THEORIES AND PRACTICES, WITH PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO THE MANIFESTATION OF THESE THEORIES IN COMMUNITY BASED CORRECTIONS.
Abstract
CORRECTIONAL IDEOLOGY HAS CHANGED, THE FOCUS SHIFTING FROM THINKING OF THE OFFENDER AS A SICK INDIVIDUAL TO THE IDEA THAT BOTH HE AND THE SOCIETY ARE IN NEED OF CHANGE AND MUTUAL REINTEGRATION. COMMUNITY BASED CORRECTIONAL PROGRAMS HAVE INCREASED IN COMPLEXITY, IN MANY CASES RESULTING IN BUREAUCRATIZATION. VOLUNTEER WORKERS HAVE ASSUMED A MORE IMPORTANT AND INDEPENDENT ROLE AND AT THE SAME TIME THERE HAS BEEN AN INCREASED EMPHASIS ON OFFENDER SELF-DIRECTION. THERE HAS ALSO BEEN A MOVE FOR INCREASED LEGAL SAFEGUARDS FOR OFFENDERS INCLUDING STANDARDS FOR DECISION-MAKING AT ALL LEVELS OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROCESS.
