This article discusses some issues of public safety in Hungary, focusing on current crime statistics.
Abstract
There has been a significant increase in recent years in crimes committed in nearly all the Eastern and Central European countries. Hungary has experienced both a qualitative and a quantitative increase in crime since the early 1990's; the crime rate for 1992 was more than triple that of 1980. Today, there are 3,800 crimes committed per 100,000 inhabitants in Hungary; comparable figures for Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Sweden are 6,200, 5,400, 10,000, and 13,600, respectively. The author suggests that Hungarian police agencies need to enhance their crime prevention and detection programs.
