A DISCUSSION OF THE SCIENTIFIC BASIS OF VOICEPRINTS, THE LEGAL DECISIONS INVOLVING THEIR USE, AND AUSTRALIAN RESEARCH INTO VOICE IDENTIFICATION.
Abstract
THE VOICEPRINT SYSTEM DEVELOPED BY LAWRENCE KERSTA IS CONTRASTED WITH THE PROCEDURES OF LIEUTENANT NASH, THE MICHIGAN STATE POLICE, WHO USED LONG PHRASES RATHER THAN SINGLE WORDS. THE OPINIONS OF PROFESSORS TOSI AND LADEFOGED (EACH OF WHOM THINKS VOICE IDENTIFICATION BY SPECTROGRAM SHOULD BE ADMISSIBLE) ARE EXPLAINED. ADMISSIBILITY OF VOICEPRINT EVIDENCE IN AUSTRALIAN COURTS SEEMS TO BE CONTINGENT ON THE WIDESPREAD ACCEPTANCE OF THIS EVIDENCE IN UNITED STATES COURTS. SEVERAL CASES ARE CITED IN WHICH THIS EVIDENCE WAS ACCEPTED.
