This analysis of the Federal followup investigations of drug smuggling interdictions in south Florida concludes that using the U.S. Customs Service to conduct followup investigations in other parts of the country does not appear justified, although such authority may be desirable to augment Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) staff.
Abstract
Study data came from interviews with officials and reviews of written records at the Miami headquarters of the Florida Joint Task Group, which carries out the Federal followup investigations. The Customs Service's authority to perform these followup investigations is unique to the Nation's drug interdiction efforts. The investigations produced useful information but were not a major source of information leading to additional drug interdictions. However, using the Customs Service to conduct followup investigations of drug interdictions under DEA direction in other parts of the Nation could be desirable if DEA lacked sufficient personnel to conduct these investigations. Appended agency comments.
