This article discusses crimes against children perpetrated over the Internet, discusses efforts initiated by the Texas Attorney General to address sex offenses and other crimes resulting from children’s use of the Internet, and describes national organizations and other resources available to deal with the issue.
Abstract
A 1999 survey conducted by the Crimes Against Children Research Center indicated that 1 young person in 5 had been solicited sexually over the Internet in the past year and that 1 in 17 experienced threats or harassment. Texas Attorney General John Cornyn has directed his agency to focus on Internet crimes and specifically on child pornography and online business fraud. The Attorney General offers help to local police agencies through a specialized Internet Bureau. Other resources for policing the Internet include pending Federal legislation called the Cybermolesters Enforcement Act, a program of the Texas Internet Service Providers, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, and other services.
