THIS FILMSTRIP AND CASSETTE TAPE PRESENTATION, PART OF A LAW EDUCATION PROGRAM DEVELOPED FOR DADE COUNTY, FLA., JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOLS, DESCRIBES AND ILLUSTRATES THE WORKINGS OF FLORIDA'S JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM.
Abstract
THE PRESENTATION'S GOAL IS TO ILLUSTRATE THE TREATMENT OF A JUVENILE OFFENDER AND TO DIFFERENTIATE IT FROM ADULT TREATMENT. PROCEDURES DISCUSSED INCLUDE ARREST, PRELIMINARY PROCEEDINGS, INTERROGATIONS, THE TRIAL SEARCH AND SEIZURE, AND SENTENCING. THE PRESENTATION SNATCHING, VANDALISM, AUTOMOBILE THEFT) BEING COMMITTED BY JUVENILES. VIEWERS ARE THEN ASKED WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF THEY WERE CAUGHT. TREATMENT OF JUVENILE OFFENDERS BEFORE THERE WAS A JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM IS DESCRIBED BRIEFLY. CRIMINAL PROCEDURES COVERED ARE WARNING AND DISMISSAL BY THE APPREHENDING POLICE OFFICER, CASE REVIEW BY A POLICE DEPARTMENT'S JUVENILE SECTION, CITING TO THE COURT, INTAKE CONFERENCE, PROCESSING THROUGH THE DETENTION CENTER, ARRAIGNMENT, DISPOSITION, ADJUDICATORY HEARING, AND SECURE AND NONSECURE DETENTION. FLORIDA TREATMENT PROGRAMS INCLUDE STATE TRAINING SCHOOLS AND NUMEROUS COMMUNITY-BASED PROGRAMS SUCH AS THE MIAMI FLA., TRY CENTER, HALFWAY HOUSES, GROUP HOMES, AND THE DADE MARINE INSTITUTE. THE 17 PERCENT RECIDIVISM RATE AMONG DADE MARINE INSTITUTE PARTICIPANTS ILLUSTRATES THE SUCCESS OF THE COMMUNITY-BASED PROGRAMS. AFTER-CARE SERVICES ALSO ARE AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE TREATMENT OF JUVENILE OFFENDERS. THE FILMSTRIP IS PART OF THE LAW EDUCATION GOALS AND LEARNING (LEGAL) PROJECT OPERATED BY THE DADE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD.
