THIS FILMSTRIP AND CASSETTE TAPE PRESENTATION, PART OF A LAW EDUCATION PROGRAM DEVELOPED FOR THE DADE COUNTY, FLA., SENIOR HIGH SCHOOLS, DESCRIBES AND ILLUSTRATES METHODS OF CONDUCTING LEGAL RESEARCH.
Abstract
THE PRESENTATION'S GOAL IS TO AID THOSE STUDENTS TAKING A COURSE INVOLVING A COMMUNITY LAW RESEARCH PROJECT IN UNDERSTANDING HOW ATTORNEYS AND OTHERS CONDUCT LEGAL RESEARCH. SOURCES OF KNOWLEDGE ON THE LAW INCLUDE LAW SCHOOL LIBRARIES, COURTHOUSES, AND ATTORNEYS' OFFICES. APPLIED LAW IS BASED ON WRITTEN LAW (CONSTITUTION, STATUTES, ORDINANCES, AND REGULATIONS) AND ON JUDICIAL DECISIONS. THE U.S. REPORTS IS THE OFFICIAL REPORTER OF SUPREME COURT DECISIONS. THE SOUTHERN REPORTER RECORDS CASES FROM ALABAMA, MISSOURI, LOUISIANA, AND FLORIDA. THE AMERICAN DIGEST SYSTEM ORGANIZES LAW UNDER MAJOR SUBJECT HEADINGS THAT ARE LISTED ALPHABETICALLY. THE DIGEST SUMMARIES (HEADNOTES) HELP ATTORNEYS FIND CASES SUPPORTING THEIR POSITIONS. HEADNOTES SUMMARIZE THE SOURCE, COURT, DATES, COURT'S OPINION, AND CASE'S LEGAL HISTORY. IN PREPARING THEIR ARGUMENTS, ATTORNEYS CONDENSE AND PARAPHRASE EACH CASE BY BRIEFING IT. OTHER LAW RESEARCH SOURCES INCLUDE TREATISES, LOOSELEAF SERVICES, AND COMPUTER-ASSISTED EQUIPMENT. THE FILMSTRIP IS PART OF THE LAW EDUCATION GOALS AND LEARNING (LEGAL) PROJECT OPERATED BY THE DADE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD. PROGRAM GOAL IS TO DEVELOP STUDENT UNDERSTANDING AND SKILLS RELATED TO THE CRIMINAL AND CIVIL (CONSUMER) JUSTICE SYSTEMS. FOR THE OTHER COMPONENTS OF THE LEGAL PROGRAM FOR SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS, SEE NCJ 62130, 62133, 62134, 62141-62147, AND 62149. (CFW)
