THIS INSTRUCTOR'S GUIDE, PART OF A LAW EDUCATION PROGRAM DEVELOPED FOR THE DADE COUNTY, FLA., PUBLIC SCHOOLS, PRESENTS THE GOALS, CONTENT, AND STUDENT EXERCISES FOR A HIGH SCHOOL COURSE ON JUSTICE IN AMERICA.
Abstract
THE COURSE IS AN ELECTIVE POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC STUDIES COURSE FOR 10TH THROUGH 12TH GRADERS WHO READ AT OR ABOVE THE 6TH-GRADE LEVEL. THE COURSE'S GOAL IS TO ENABLE STUDENTS TO (1) IDENTIFY THE BASIC CONCEPTS ON WHICH THE CIVIL AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEMS REST, (2) LEARN AND APPLY LEGAL RESEARCH TECHNIQUES, (3) UNDERSTAND CRIMINAL AND CONSUMER LAW, AND (4) DEVELOP APPROPRIATE CITIZENSHIP ATTITUDES AND SKILLS. THE FIRST HALF OF THE COURSE FOCUSES ON THE TERMINOLOGY AND WORKINGS OF THE CRIMINAL AND CIVIL JUSTICE SYSTEMS AND EMPHASIZES APPLICATIONS TO SIMULATED AND REAL LIFE PROBLEMS AND CASE STUDIES. THE COURSE'S SECOND HALF EMPHASIZES EVALUATION OF LEGAL PROCESSES AND APPLICATION OF LEGAL RESEARCH TECHNIQUES. A SUMMARY OF EACH CONCEPT IS ACCOMPANIED BY THE RELATED LEARNING OBJECTIVES AND SPECIFIC ORAL AND WRITTEN EXERCISES DESIGNED TO ACHIEVE EACH OBJECTIVE. EACH LEARNING ACTIVITY'S LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY (BELOW AVERAGE TO AVERAGE AND AVERAGE TO ABOVE AVERAGE) IS NOTED TO ENABLE THE TEACHER TO CHOOSE THE ACTIVITIES MOST SUITABLE FOR THE CLASS. THIS COURSE IS PART OF A PROGRAM DEVELOPED BY THE LAW EDUCATION GOALS AND LEARNINGS (LEGAL) PROJECT OPERATED BY THE DADE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD. THE PROJECT WAS FUNDED UNDER TITLE IV OF THE ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION ACT. PROJECT GOAL IS TO DEVELOP STUDENT UNDERSTANDING AND SKILLS RELATED TO THE CRIMINAL AND CIVIL (CONSUMER) JUSTICE SYSTEMS.
