Abstract
OPERATED BY THE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD, THE LAW EDUCATION GOALS AND LEARNING (LEGAL) PROJECT WAS FUNDED UNDER TITLE IV OF THE ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION ACT. THE PROJECT GOAL IS TO DEVELOP STUDENT UNDERSTANDING AND SKILLS RELATED TO CRIMINAL AND CIVIL (CONSUMER) LAW AND THE JUSTICE SYSTEM. THE PROJECT HAS FIVE PARTS: (1) IDENTIFICATION OF APPROPRIATE CURRICULUM MATERIALS, (2) DEVELOPMENT OF COURSES ON CIVIL AND CRIMINAL LAW, (3) TEACHER INSERVICE TRAINING, (4) DEVELOPMENT OF FIELD EXPERIENCE MODULES FOR JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS, AND (5) DEVELOPMENT OF COMMUNITY-BASED LAW RESEARCH MODULES FOR SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. THE PROJECT HAS 25 MAJOR COGNITIVE OBJECTIVES. EXAMPLES ARE DEVELOPMENT OF STUDENT ABILITY TO DESCRIBE THE LAW'S ORIGINS AND ABILITY TO DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN CRIMINAL AND CIVIL LAW. BOOKS AND OTHER CURRICULUM MATERIALS DEVELOPED FOR THE PROGRAM ARE DESCRIBED. PROCEDURES FOR INSTALLING THE PROGRAM AT A SCHOOL INCLUDE TEACHER TRAINING, STUDENT SELECTION, AND PROVISION OF CURRICULUM MATERIALS. PROGRAM EVALUATION PROCEDURES AND ADMINISTRATIVE CONCERNS SUCH AS COST AND MANAGERS' RESPONSIBILITIES ARE DISCUSSED. SIX APPENDIXES FURTHER DISCUSS CURRICULUM OBJECTIVES, THE LEGAL PROJECT, COURSE ASSESSMENT, STATE GUIDELINES FOR TEACHING CONTROVERSIAL ISSUES, RECOMMENDED TEXTBOOKS, AND SUPPLEMENTARY SOURCES. FOR THE OTHER COMPONENTS OF THE LEGAL PROGRAM FOR JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS, SEE NCJ 62128, 62129, AND 62131-62139. (CFW)
