THIS TEACHER'S EDITION OF A STUDENT SOURCEBOOK FOR DADE COUNTY, FLA., SENIOR HIGH SCHOOLS ACCOMPANIES A COURSE ON JUSTICE IN AMERICA AND PRESENTS THE STUDENT SOURCEBOOK PLUS PRETESTS, POSTTESTS, AND LEARNING STRATEGIES.
Abstract
THE COURSE GOAL IS TO PROMOTE STUDENT UNDERSTANDING OF LAW IN U.S. SOCIETY BY DEVELOPING FAMILIARITY WITH CASES AND ISSUES INVOLVED. THE SOURCEBOOK HAS FOUR UNITS: A CASE STUDY INTRODUCING THE JUDICIAL SYSTEM AND UNITS ON MINORITIES AND THE LAW, WOMEN AND THE LAW, AND LATINS AND THE LAW. ALL STUDENTS MUST COMPLETE THE CASE STUDY UNIT AS WELL AS ONE OF THE OTHER UNITS. AT LEAST FIVE DIFFERENT LEARNING STRATEGIES MUST BE USED. POSSIBLE LEARNING STRATEGIES INCLUDE HYPOTHETICAL CASE STUDY, DATA COLLECTION AND EVALUATION, SOCIODRAMA, MOCK APPEALS CASE, POSTERS DISPLAY, NEWS MEDIA ANALYSIS, MUSIC AND/OR SLIDE PRESENTATION, DEBATE, INTERVIEW OF COMMUNITY RESOURCE PEOPLE, AND PROBLEMSOLVING DISCUSSIONS. FOR EACH COURSE UNIT, A GENERAL DESCRIPTION, RATIONALE FOR THE UNIT, UNIT TEXT, AND POSSIBLE LEARNING STRATEGIES ARE PRESENTED. THE COURSE IS PART OF A PROGRAM DEVELOPED BY THE LAW EDUCATION GOALS AND LEARNINGS (LEGAL) PROJECT OPERATED BY THE DADE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD. THE PROJECT WAS FUNDED UNDER TITLE IV OF THE ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION ACT. THE PROJECT GOAL IS TO DEVELOP STUDENT UNDERSTANDING AND SKILLS RELATED TO THE CRIMINAL AND CIVIL (CONSUMER) JUSTICE SYSTEMS.
