Abstract
THE REPORT INCLUDES A COMPILATION OF BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON THE PROJECT PERSONNEL, AN EXPLANATION OF THE PROJECT'S PHILOSOPHY AND HISTORY, AND MENTION OF SOME OF THE PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED. TRAINING ACTIVITIES, PROJECT OPERATIONS, AND INNOVATIONS ARE OUTLINED. AN EVALUATION OF THE SAFE STREETS UNIT'S EFFECTIVENESS IS DISCUSSED IN DETAIL. DATA ON FINANCES AND EQUIPMENT ARE PROVIDED. APPENDED MATERIAL INCLUDES TRAINING SCHEDULES, COPIES OF QUESTIONNAIRES USED IN ASSESSING ATTITUDES TOWARD THE SAFE STREETS UNIT, TABLES OF COMPARATIVE DATA, AND THE MANUSCRIPT OF 'DIAGNOSTIC INTERVIEWING FOR POLICE OFFICERS'.
