Total reported crime in Dakota County (Minnesota) increased by 5,143 occurrences from 1980 to 1989. The less serious Type II crimes increased at almost twice the rate as the more serious Type I crimes (murder, rape, aggravated assault, robbery, burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft, and arson).
Abstract
While the number of reported crimes showed significant growth since 1980, the large population growth resulted in declining crime rates. The total number of juvenile arrests increased by 10 percent since 1980. Larcenies accounted for 86 percent of all arrests in 1989, and violent crimes showed a sharp increase where in previous years there had been considerable fluctuation. Burglaries also varied, but have declined for the last 2 years. Driving under the influence (DUI) arrest figures may be influenced by the increase in the population which accounts for DUI arrests -- young, adult males. Policies of police departments may also be a factor. The number of arrests for drunk driving showed the most pronounced decline of the decade -- a decline of 84 arrests.
