New extremist threats have emerged that endanger public safety and civic unity; in particular, the radical right has generated extreme political rhetoric and has engaged in criminal activities in recent years.
Abstract
Extremists depict America as an occupied country and as the besieged victim of conspiracies instituted by sinister elites. Hostility toward the Federal Government has characterized the vanguard of organized extremism. Militia movements are active in 40 States, with an estimated 15,000 members. Major developments related to extremism include activities of skinheads, the Ku Klux Klan, and specific individuals such as David Duke, as well as the marketing of extremist materials on the Internet. The role of law enforcement agencies and the work of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) in the struggle against extremism is addressed, and extremist activities of specific individuals and organizations are detailed. Appendixes contain additional information on the use of the Internet by extremists, a list of extreme right publications, and a glossary of Ku Klux Klan terminology. A bibliography of ADL publications is included. Photographs and illustrations
