This article discusses the special considerations of hybrid vehicle accidents.
Abstract
A hybrid vehicle is an electric vehicle that combines the internal combustion engine of a conventional vehicle with the battery and electric motor of an electric vehicle to offer the motorist twice the fuel economy of a regular car. When involved in an accident, these vehicles present new challenges and dangers that first responders need to be aware of. To keep themselves and those involved in the accident safe, officers must have a general understanding of how a hybrid vehicle operates, the safety concerns they present, and know the proper precautions to take when responding to an accident. The Toyota Prius and Honda Insight are presently the only hybrid vehicles on the highways. All hybrids have two motors: one electric and one gasoline. In case of a motor vehicle accident, both the Prius and the Insight have built-in safety systems that are designed to automatically isolate the high voltage at the battery pack to prevent injury. Though these safety systems are in place, a first responder should always be prepared just in case these systems fail. Officers must stay away from any components that are colored bright orange. They should be on alert for any arcing. There is a distinct chance that the cable protection might be compromised. This takes on a special meaning when part of the accident investigation involves looking under the vehicle. In the event that the battery pack splits open, the officer must stay away from the vehicle. Only properly protected fire, rescue, and EMS personnel should be allowed in close proximity to the hybrid vehicle. The electrolyte in the pack will cause severe chemical burns if unprotected individuals come into contact with it. First responders should get away as rapidly as possible if the hybrid vehicle catches on fire. They should stay away from the front and rear of the vehicle, and remain low. Several ways to make the scene as safe as possible, if deemed safe, are to chock the wheels so the vehicle cannot roll, put transmission into either park or low gear, and turn the ignition off, remove the key, and put into pocket.
