These two volumes present National and State data pertinent to progress toward the National Education Goals set by the 1989 Education Summit in Charlottesville, Va., and then adopted and expanded by the U.S. Congress in 1994.
Abstract
The eight educational goals adopted by Congress are "ready to learn;" "school completion;" "student achievement and citizenship;" "teacher education and professional development;" "mathematics and science;" "adult literacy and lifelong learning;" "safe, disciplined, and alcohol- and drug-free schools;" and "parental participation." These volumes present data pertinent to the objectives of each of these goals at national and State levels. Sixteen exhibits present national data pertinent to the goal of safe, disciplined, and alcohol- and drug-free schools. Data pertain to the sale of drugs at school; the obtaining of illegal drugs at school; the use of drugs at school by 8th, 10th, and 12th graders; overall student drug use; being under the influence of alcohol or other drugs while at school; and carrying weapons to school. Other national data pertinent to this goal address student victimization, student membership in gangs, student safety, teacher safety, teacher victimization, disruptions in class by students, skipping school and classes, teacher beliefs about the school environment, and student attitudes toward drug use. Data relevant to the education goals are also presented for each State, American Samoa, Guam, Northern Marianas, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. Appended sources and technical notes
