Data from the South Dakota Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN) for January-June 1992 revealed that 130 of the 209 drug abuse cases mentioned by hospital emergency rooms involved females and that suicide attempts accounted for 78 percent of the cases.
Abstract
The percentage of cases involving alcohol decreased by 3 percent, and the percentage of cases not involving alcohol increased by 8 percent from the previous reporting period. Seventy-eight percent of the individuals admitted to an emergency room were then admitted to the hospital, while 18 percent were treated and released and 3 percent left against medical advice. Forty-nine percent were ages 21-39, while 34 percent were 12-20 years old. The individuals in these age groups were most likely to report non-narcotic analgesics as the ingested substance, while tranquilizers were most common among the older individuals. The most commonly abused drugs were acetaminophen, aspirin, Alprazolam, Ibuprofen, Clonazepam, Acetaminophen with codeine, Amitriptyline, Lorazepam, Diazepam, and Propoxyphene.
