SEVEN SURVEYS USED IN THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA POLICEWOMEN EVALUATION.
Abstract
THE FIRST SURVEY, THE PATROL SURVEY, IS AN ANONYMOUS, SELF-ADMINISTERED ATTITUDE SURVEY GIVEN TO MALE AND FEMALE PATROL OFFICERS IN THE EXPERIMENTAL AND COMPARISON DISTRICTS. THE OFFICIALS' SURVEY IS AN ANONYMOUS, SELF-ADMINISTERED ATTITUDE SURVEY, AND ANONYMOUS PERFORMANCE RATINGS OF ALL WOMEN, THE COMPARISON MEN, AND MATCHED MEN IN THE EXPERIMENTAL DISTRICTS GIVEN TO (MALE) SERGEANTS, LIEUTENANTS AND CAPTAINS IN THE EXPERIMENTAL AND COMPARISON DISTRICTS. THE COMMUNITY AND BUSINESS SURVEY IS A TELEPHONE ATTITUDE SURVEY GIVEN TO A STRATIFIED SAMPLE OF COMMUNITY RESIDENTS AND SPECIFIED TYPES OF BUSINESS PEOPLE IN EXPERIMENTAL AND COMPARISON DISTRICTS. THE SERVICE SURVEY IS AN ATTITUDE SURVEY AND PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT CONDUCTED BY TELEPHONE AND PERSONAL INTERVIEWERS GIVEN TO INDIVIDUALS WHO HAD RECEIVED POLICE SERVICE FROM NEW POLICEWOMEN OR COMPARISON MEN. THE STRUCTURED OBSERVATION SCHEDULE IS AN ASSESSMENT OF THE PERFORMANCE OF NEW WOMEN AND COMPARISON MEN AND ITS EFFECT ON CITIZENS, CONDUCTED BY TRAINED OBSERVERS RIDING IN SCOUT CARS WITH THE OFFICERS. THE CHIEF'S SURVEY IS A QUESTIONNAIRE REQUESTED BY THE CHIEF OF POLICE REQUIRING THE LISTING OF ASSIGNMENTS, ARRESTS AND PUBLIC REACTIONS AS WELL AS OFFICIAL PERFORMANCE RATINGS OF ALL WOMEN AND COMPARISON MEN GIVEN TO DISTRICT COMMANDERS IN THE DISTRICTS TO WHICH THESE OFFICERS WERE ASSIGNED.
