This manual is intended to provide school superintendents and other administrators with information for use in stimulating rational community discussion of the need for an AIDS education program, acceptance of the integration of such a program into the school district's curriculum, and agreement on its content.
Abstract
An overview explains the epidemiology of AIDS and emphasizes that teenagers are at high risk for AIDS because of their experimentation with sex and drugs. Recommended steps in developing an AIDS education include seeking the board's approval to explore the development of an AIDS education program; establishing a task force that includes school staff, other professionals, parents, and students; addressing specific questions that arise at the local level; reporting the task force findings; and securing approval for the implementation of the program. Lists and discussion of sample evaluation criteria, learner outcomes, and lesson plan; glossary, lists of resources; sample visual aids; and list of advisory committee members.
