"Dealing with Anger" is a training video series designed for African American youths as part of a violence prevention program.
Abstract
By using the issues, dress, and language of adolescents, the video presents culturally relevant information. The tapes are divided into three target skills: Givin' It shows how to express angry feelings and remain in control; Takin' It involves listening to and accepting criticism; and Workin' It Out offers negotiation skills. Each section starts with a vignette of a situation that ends in potential violence. After the narrator lists the steps that could have prevented a hostile confrontation, the scene is replayed with an alternative ending. Training sessions involving a small group of male youths who describe their own conflict situations follow each section. The youths offer and receive feedback from their peers and role-play a few situations using the correct steps. The video leads into a turn off point where leaders and participants can review what they have just seen.
