A STUDY OF CHARACTERISTICS AND TREATMENT METHODS USED FOR THREE KINDS OF DEVIANTS IN A PRISON, A PSYCHIATRIC UNIT AND A HOSTEL FOR EX-PRISONERS.
Abstract
THE FIRST SECTION DESCRIBES THE MEDICAL APPROACH TO SOCIAL DEVIANCE AND THE EVOLUTION OF THE THERAPEUTIC COMMUNITY METHOD OF TREATMENT. IT DESCRIBES THE APPLICATION OF THE THERAPEUTIC COMMUNITY METHODS TO YOUNG DEVIANTS AT THE HENDERSON HOSPITAL IN ENGLAND. THE SECOND SECTION EXAMINES WAYS THE PENAL SYSTEM HAS TACKLED DEVIANCE AND DESCRIBES THE DEVELOPMENT OF A THERAPEUTIC COMMUNITY APPROACH IN ONE PRISON IN THE UNITED STATES. THE THIRD SECTION IS DEVOTED TO DEVIANCE IN THE GENERAL COMMUNITY AND DESCRIBES THE INADEQUATE AND MUDDLED ATTEMPTS THAT HAVE BEEN MADE TO ACCOMMODATE DEVIANTS IN HOSTELS AND INSTITUTIONS. THE FINAL CHAPTER OF THE BOOK MAKES A COMPARISON OF THE THREE APPROACHES WITH THE OBJECT OF ILLUSTRATING THEIR POTENTIAL AS WELL AS DRAWING ATTENTION TO THEIR LIMITATIONS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
