The policy of the Toledo (Ohio) Police division regarding death of an active duty member is to provide liaison assistance to the immediate family, regardless of whether the death occurs on duty or off duty or is caused by a felonious act, accidental circumstances, or illness. Similar liaison assistance is available to police officers who are incapacitated in the line of duty.
Abstract
These procedural guidelines cover notifications of death or severe injury to the next of kin. Notifications are always made promptly, in person, and by two officers. The Hospital Liaison Officer is responsible for assisting the family at the hospital, while the Family Liaison Officer provides practical and emotional support during the wake and funeral. This policy outlines the specific responsibilities related to police officer deaths of Division Liaison Officers, Public Information Officers, the Field Operations Bureau Commander, and the Personnel/Fiscal Affairs Section. General funeral procedures and other responsibilities of the police department toward officers' survivors. 1 appendix
