Abstract
Each entry begins with four subheadings: the status, as of mid-1988, of the death penalty in the country (abolitionist, abolitionist for all but exceptional crimes, or retentionist); the number of executions between 1985 and mid-1988; other factors, and methods of execution. The principle offenses punishable by death are listed, indicating whether the penalty is optional or mandatory under the law. Categories of excluded offenders are also noted. The entries detail judicial procedures, separating civilian from military or other special courts. Trends and new developments are described where information is available.
