This report presents statistics on death row inmates and executions as of January 1, 2000 and summarizes United States Supreme Court decisions related to capital punishment.
Abstract
The country had 3,652 death row inmates on January 1, 2000, including 3,600 males and 52 females. These included 1,701 white defendants, 1,562 black defendants, 212 Hispanic defendants, 45 Native American Indian defendants, 31 Asian defendants, and 1 person whose race was unknown. Sixty-nine male juveniles were on death row. Five hundred ninety-eight executions, 54 inmate suicides, 90 commutations, 157 deaths from natural causes or killings, and 1,697 sentence or conviction reversals have occurred since January 1, 1973. Supreme Court decisions have related to constitutional issues and issues related habeas corpus, harmless error, and Federal statutes. Five hundred ninety-eight executions have occurred since the 1976 reinstatement of capital punishment. Tables and list of individuals executed
