This journal section presents three articles on suggestions for prison population reduction based on actual experiences in Canada, the Netherlands, and England.
Abstract
The Canadian alternative focuses on prison population reduction or stabilizaton through reduced sentence lengths, that is reduction through a change in judiciary decisionmaking. The British section uses tabular data to illustrate how ambiguous executive decisions can confound attempts at penal reform and prison population reduction and can, in fact, increase the problem. The Dutch section summarizes past Dutch practices in response to the shortage of prison cells and suggests nine executive alternatives to increasing the number of cells. English language references.
