This study of crime patterns in India examines nationwide crime increases from 1969 through 1978 as well as crime increases in the State of Maharashtra over the same period; female criminality, patterns in particular offenses, and the correlation of crime with economic change are also analyzed.
Abstract
Over the 10 years examined, India's crime has increased at a rate more than twice that of the population growth rate. Throughout the 10 years, Maharashtra was one of the three States with the highest crime rate. A comparison of male and female crime for 1971-78 indicates that female crime had increased 55.9 percent compared to a male crime increase of 41.87 percent. Burglary and thefts composed the highest percentage of offenses (89.69 percent in Maharashtra and 89.03 percent in India as whole). Economic prosperity in India has grown at the same time the crime rate has increased, suggesting that affluence stimulates acquisitive property crimes.
