STUDY OF THE INFLUENCES EXERTED BY BACKGROUND AND ORGANIZATIONAL SETTINGS ON THE DECISION MAKING OF THE PROBATION OFFICER.
Abstract
REPORT POINTS OUT THAT THE RECIDIVISM PROBLEM IS NOT ENTIRELY RELATED TO THE CLIENT, BUT IS IN PART DUE TO JUDGMENTS MADE BY THE PROBATION WORKER WHO IS STRONGLY INFLUENCED BY THE ORGANIZATIONAL AND GEOGRAPHIC CONTEXT IN WHICH HE OPERATES. THUS ONE ASPECT OF THE RESEARCH PROBLEM IS THE INVESTIGATION OF INFLUENCES OF METROPOLITAN AND NON-METROPOLITAN SETTINGS ON DECISIONMAKING STYLES. ANOTHER FOCUS OF THE STUDY IS ON CHARACTERISTICS OF PROBATION ADMINISTRATORS PARTICULARLY THOSE THEY SHARE IN COMMON. DATA FOR THE STUDY WERE OBTAINED FROM PROBATION OFFICERS PARTICIPATING IN THE PROBATION MANAGEMENT INSTITUTES, 8 REGIONAL PROGRAMS CONDUCTED FROM 1967 TO 1969. SUBJECTS OF THE STUDY ARE FROM DIFFERENT TYPES OF PROBATION ORGANIZATIONS, AREAS AND BACKGROUNDS. REPORT INCLUDES QUESTIONNAIRES AND OTHER TESTING USED IN THE STUDY AND ANALYSIS OF THE RESULTING FINDINGS.
