Abstract
This handbook, from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), provides information for law enforcement personnel on assessing a child sex offender's (CSO's) risk factors for suicide and other violence. The information in the handbook is based on a review of FBI case files of over 100 male CSOs who committed suicide. Information is provided about specific techniques that law enforcement personnel can use to decrease the dangers posed by CSOs to law enforcement and the public. The handbook describes the need for expanding operational procedures when dealing with CSOs, and provides details on conducting an operational safety interview (OSI) which is used to asses a CSO's risk for violence or suicide. The handbook also discusses the need for addressing administrative matters, proper documentation, and legal considerations that may arise when dealing with CSOs. Appendixes
