Abstract
THE STUDY IS BASED UPON CLOSE OBSERVATION OF CRIMINAL CASES BEGUN IN THE COURTS OF ONE LARGE CITY IN ENGLAND OVER A SIX-MONTH PERIOD, AND INTERVIEWS WITH MANY OF THE DEFENDANTS, BOTH CONVICTED AND ACQUITTED. THE BOOK EXAMINES DEFENDANTS' DECISIONS AS TO VENUE, PLEA, LEGAL REPRESENTATION AND APPEAL, AND THEIR PART IN BAIL OR CUSTODY DECISIONS. IT EXAMINES THE FLOW OF BUSINESS IN THE COURTS AND THE PROBLEMS AND IMPLICATIONS OF DELAY. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
