A DISCUSSION OF THE VARIOUS TYPES OF HANDGUNS AVAILABLE TO THE POLICE OFFICER SHOWS THE IMPORTANCE OF SELECTING THE PROPER WEAPON, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT IS TO BE USED IN A STRESSFUL SITUATION.
Abstract
TO STOP VIOLENCE, THE POLICE OFFICER MUST POSSESS AN EFFECTIVE MARKSMEN, A GUN MUST BE SELECTED THAT WILL RESPOND WELL IN ADVERSE SITUATIONS. WELL-PRACTICED PEOPLE WHO CAN REMAIN CALM IN CRITICAL SITUATIONS CAN USE A FAST, HIGH-POWERED GUN (A .45 ACP AND .44 AND .41 MAGNUM, PREFERABLY AUTOMATIC BECAUSE OF THE LARGER AMOUNT OF AMMUNITION AVAILABLE). LESS CAPABLE MARKSMEN SHOULD PICK GUNS OF LESSER INTENSITY BUT LARGE MAGAZINE CAPACITY (MEDIUM-POWERED SEMIAUTOMATICS, SUCH AS A COLT .38 SUPER OR A 9MM LUGER). CHARTS, TABLES AND PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE SUGGESTED WEAPONS ARE INCLUDED. (GWC)
