SECTION 22 OF GREAT BRITAIN'S CRIMINAL JUSTICE ACT OF 1972 EMPOWERED THE CROWN COURT AND MAGISTRATES' COURTS TO DEFER PASSING SENTENCE ON AN OFFICER AFTER CONVICTION, FOR A SINGLE PERIOD OF UP TO SIX MONTHS.
Abstract
THIS ARTICLE DISCUSSES THE RESULTS OF TWO QUESTIONNAIRE SURVEYS ON THE USE OF THE DEFERMENT POWER BY CONDON COURTS DURING APRIL, MAY, AND JUNE 1973. DATA IS PROVIDED ON BOTH OFFENDER CHARACTERISTICS AND THE TYPES OF OFFENSES FOR WHICH SENTENCING WAS DEFERRED.
