This document explains different aspects of the illicit drug policy of European Union (EU) member states.
Abstract
Decriminalization and differentiation of illicit drugs have taken place in recent years in a number of European countries. These concern the classification of illicit drugs according to the type and quantity of the seized drug, as well as the illicit use, possession, and trafficking of prohibited drugs. There have been changes in the use of alternative forms of punishment also. Most of the EU member states are in the process of changing the legal status of cannabis in terms of milder treatment of drug-related delinquency. The repressive model of drug policy has been exhausted. A number of countries have changed their attitude toward the use and possession of illicit drugs, especially cannabis. Presumably, these changes will improve the current situation regarding the use of illicit drugs and the situation of those users of illicit drugs that do not represent any harm to their surroundings and are completely unproblematic. 10 references
