A REPORT ON THE BACKGROUND AND ESTABLISHMENT OF A RESEARCH AND TREATMENT PROJECT DESIGNED TO ASSESS A SEGMENT OF A DELINQUENCY TYPOLOGY TREATMENT MODEL.
Abstract
THREE OF GIBBONS' DELINQUENT TYPOLOGIES, THE 'PREDATORY GANG DELINQUENT', THE 'CASUAL GANG DELINQUENT', AND THE 'BEHAVIOR PROBLEM DELINQUENT' WERE SELECTED FOR STUDY. IT WAS FELT THAT THESE REPRESENTED THE BASIC SCHOOLS OF CRIMINOLOGICAL CAUSATION - THE SOCIOLOGICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL. THE MOST EFFICIENT TREATMENT FOR THE FIRST TWO TYPOLOGIES WAS SAID TO BE GROUP THERAPY, WHILE THE OPTIMUM TREATMENT FOR THE BEHAVIOR PROBLEM DELINQUENT WAS SAID TO BE INDIVIDUAL THERAPY. TO TEST THE TREATMENT EFFICIENCY, JUVENILES OF EACH DELINQUENT TYPE WERE ADMINISTERED EITHER GROUP COUNSELING, INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING, OR NO COUNSELING. AS SUBJECTS ARE RELEASED, IT WAS PLANNED TO SELECT NEW SUBJECTS SO THAT BY THE END OF THE PROJECT THE TOTAL NUMBER WOULD BE BETWEEN 200 AND 300. THE JESNESS INVENTORY WAS TO BE ADMINISTERED TO EACH SUBJECT AT THE TIME OF SELECTION AND AGAIN AT THE TIME OF RELEASE. THE POLICE RECORDS OF EACH SUBJECT AND THE RECORDS OF THE PAROLE AGENCY WERE TO BE CHECKED ONE YEAR AFTER RELEASE. THE PROJECT BEGAN JULY 15, 1968, AND WAS DUE TO RUN FOR 18 MONTHS. AT THE TIME OF THIS REPORT, FEW RESULTS WERE AVAILABLE, ALTHOUGH THE AUTHOR STATES THAT HIS IMPRESSIONS SO FAR WERE FAVORABLE.
