MEASURE AND DESCRIPTION OF DELINQUENT BEHAVIOR OF TEENAGERS IN FLINT, MICHIGAN, INCLUDING COMMENTS ON CAUSALITY, AND REFERENCES TO ADOLESCENT DEVELOPMENT.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR DISTINGUISHES BETWEEN JUVENILE DELINQUENCY, WHICH CONCERNS YOUTHFUL OFFENDERS APPREHENDED BY THE POLICE AND DECLARED DELINQUENT BY A COURT, AND DELINQUENT BEHAVIOR WHICH REFERS TO OFFENSIVE BEHAVIOR - DETECTED OR NOT. FOLLOWING A BRIEF CONSIDERATION OF THE TYPOLOGICAL APPROACH, THE AUTHOR PROVIDES THE BACKGROUND FOR THE STUDY, INCLUDING A DESCRIPTION OF THE CITY, THE SAMPLE POPULATION, INTERVIEW TECHNIQUES, VALIDATION PROCEDURES, MEASURES OF DELINQUENT BEHAVIOR, AND TYPES OF DELINQUENTS. CHAPTER THREE EXAMINES THE CHARACTER OF SUCH DELINQUENT ACTS AS FRAUD, THEFT, PROPERTY INTRUSIONS, DESTRUCTION, CONCEALED WEAPONS, ASSAULT, AND VICTIMLESS CRIMES. SUCCEEDING MATERIAL DISCUSSES DEMOGRAPHIC DATA, DELINQUENT COMPANIONS, AND THE EFFECTS OF BEING DETECTED. THE CONCLUDING SECTION PRESENTS COMMON BELIEFS ON DELINQUENCY, AND CONTRADICTORY STUDY RESULTS.
