This is the Fiscal Year 2007 Annual Report of the New Zealand Ministry of Justice, which administers legislation and provides services that contribute to the country's public safety and justice.
Abstract
Among the Ministry of Justice's performance highlights for the year was the announcement of a comprehensive set of initiatives called Effective Interventions, which were designed to reduce crime, provide alternatives to prison, and make smarter use of imprisonment. During the year, the Ministry also made significant progress in developing a national performance framework for the practice of restorative justice. The framework will provide assurance for victims, offenders, the judiciary, stakeholders, and the public about the quality of restorative justice processes. In addition, the Ministry, in partnership with other agencies, has been working on a strategy for addressing problems linked to organized criminal activity in New Zealand. In April 2007, the Ministry published key findings from the New Zealand Crime and Safety Survey 2006, in which nearly 5,500 New Zealanders were asked about their experience of crime. The Ministry has also been involved in task forces for action on violence within families and sexual violence. The Ministry has continued to work in cooperation with government and nongovernment agencies to promote the identification of local crime problems and support evidence-based crime-reduction strategies. One section of this report provides a statement of service performance and a financial summary. Another section focuses on the Ministry's structure and services. This includes a description of its organizational structure, an overview of the court system, descriptions of the features of nondepartmental "output classes," statutes administered, and contact information.
