Abstract
Online learning is a training delivery technique gaining greater acceptance in law enforcement. It pays for itself as it eliminates the need for workers to travel outside their jurisdiction to attend classes and eliminates overtime pay for other personnel who fill in for them. Online learning programs allow more officers to complete, on their own schedule and at their own pace, courses necessary for professional advancement. In addition, research has shown that subject matter retention is as much as 250 percent greater when it is presented in an e-learning format. Online learning technology allows critical, specialized, and time-sensitive information to be distributed among a broad audience. This facilitates partnerships among universities who provide subject matter expertise and government agencies responsible for training and regulating frontline emergency personnel. First responder programs can also use e-learning facilities to assess learner performance, monitor user progress, and match learning resources with learning needs.
