ARTICLES ON INMATE PARTICIPATION IN THE PRISON DECISIONMAKING PROCESS ARE PRESENTED.
Abstract
THE ARTICLES CONSIDER THE FEASIBILITY OF DEMOCRACY IN PRISONS, DEMOCRACY AS AN AVENUE OF CORRECTIONAL REFORM, AND CONSTRAINTS ON DEMOCRATIC PARTICIPATION BY PRISON RESIDENTS. THE OPENING DISCUSSION INTRODUCES ISSUES CENTRAL TO THE PROBLEM OF DEMOCRATIC PRISON REFORM, EXAMINING EDUCATIONAL, POLITICAL, MORAL, AND LEGAL RATIONALES FOR DEMOCRATIZING PRISONS. OTHER ARTICLES CONCERN THE WEAKENING OF SOCIAL CONTROL MECHANISMS IN CONTEMPORARY PRISONS AND THE IMPLICATIONS FOR PRISON MANAGEMENT; THE DESIGN AND PHYSICAL LAYOUT OF PRISONS AS INHIBITING FACTORS IN DEMOCRATIC REFORM; AND THE CHANGING POLITICAL CULTURE OF PRISONS AS ILLUSTRATED IN PRISON REFORMS IN WASHINGTON. ANOTHER PAPER DISCUSSES THE NATURE OF THE ISSUES NEGOTIABLE BY INMATES, THE EXTENT TO WHICH AUTHORITIES REGARD NEGOTIATED DECISIONS AS BINDING, AND THE BASIC OBJECTIVE OF THE PROCESS OF INVOLVING INMATES IN THE DECISIONMAKING PROCESS. ALSO INCLUDED ARE REMARKS ON INMATE SELF-DETERMINATION BY A PRISON SUPERINTENDENT. BIBLIOGRAPHIES AND LISTS OF REFERENCES ACCOMPANY SOME OF THE ARTICLES.
