These three analyses use data on the processing of felony drug offenders, State crime laboratories, and county drug law enforcement to demonstrate how information can be used to assess the impact of drug control strategies.

Abstract

Understanding these impacts is crucial to all States that have had to accommodate the increasing numbers of drug offenders entering the criminal justice system. Examining how felony drug offenders are processed through the entire system makes it possible to adjust current policies and practices to help alleviate the burden that drug offenders cause. Similarly, information concerning how crime laboratories are handling drug cases will aid understanding of how efficiently drug cases are processed through the system. Crime laboratory data also provide information on the types of drugs involved in drug law offenses and can indicate fluctuations in drug amounts and purity levels. County drug law enforcement data support regional drug control strategy assessments, implementation assessments, and trend analyses. The demonstration analyses pose eight research questions that can be addressed by examining data collected by the National Drug Consortium. Figures and 13 references
