A COLLECTION OF PAPERS ARISING FROM A SEMINAR COURSE ON CORRECTIONS GIVEN AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT WHICH AIM TO DEBUNK SOME COMMON CONCEPTIONS ABOUT CORRECTIONS.
Abstract
THE FIRST PAPER COMPARES THE IMPORTATION MODEL WITH THE FUNCTIONAL MODEL AS THEY APPLY TO THE CONVENTIONS OF PRISON SOCIETY. THE SECOND ATTACKS THE MYTH THAT ALMOST ALL PRISONERS SUFFER FROM GROSS PERSONALITY DEFICIENCIES AND INADEQUACIES. THE THIRD QUESTIONS THE NECESSITY OF THE MILITARY MODEL TO PRISON SECURITY. OTHER PAPERS CONTEST THE OPINIONS THAT WOMEN CANNOT WORK SAFELY IN ALL MALE INSTITUTIONS, THAT MAXIMUM SECURITY INSTITUTIONS PROVIDE PROFESSIONAL THERAPEUTIC COUNSELING SERVICES, THAT INMATE SELF-GOVERNMENT IS FRAUGHT WITH DANGERS, AND OTHERS.
