An overview of the Department of Corrections of Thailand is provided, and statistics are cited for 1977.
Abstract
The report describes the Department's organizational structure and states its legislatively mandated goals and responsibilities (i.e. the care, custody, and rehabilitation of over 60,000 inmates). Correctional manpower statistics are given in terms of staff-inmate ratio. Training programs and personnel policies are described. Operational costs are summarized. The description of inmate programs relates to education, vocational training, religion, work, health service, and recreation. Conditions for release are explained and prerelease and aftercare services mentioned. Among significant accomplishments of 1977 are the use of volunteers in aftercare supervision, the expansion of vocational training centers for inmates, and work release programs for youthful offenders. Additional comments are made on research and planning; collaboration between the Department and Thai universities; and on international activities such as membership in international institutes, applications for foreign aid, and foreign visitors to Thai correctional facilities. Tables, charts, graphs, and photographs are supplied, as is an English summary of the text.
