The report discusses the planning and implementation of a course in police science sponsored by the Des Moines Police Department (Iowa) and offered by the Des Moines Technical High School for students interested in police careers.
Abstract
Through a discussion of the planning procedures used in Des Moines, guidelines are offered regarding finding a teacher with previous experience in some area of law enforcement, the use of texts and the need for improved texts aimed at the high school student, the use and procurement of additional resource material and reference books, and planning field trips, such as rides in squad cars. An evaluation of the program concludes that due to the success of the pilot project, the course has become part of the regular curriculum. Also, the course improved the image and understanding of law enforcement agencies and personnel among high school students increased student knowledge of the problems and functions of law enforcement, and seems to have stimulated student interest in making a career in police work. Problems were noted in screening students in inadequate counseling, and in scarce resource material at appropriate levels of instruction.
