AN ANALYSIS OF ALL ASPECTS OF AIR PIRACY INCLUDING CAUSATION AND PREVENTION.
Abstract
THE POTENTIAL DANGER TO PASSENGERS AND CREW MEMBERS OF HIJACKED PLANES HAS ADDED A NOTE OF UNCERTAINTY TO INTERNATIONAL COMMERCE AND TRAVEL. THIS STUDY INCLUDES THE MOST RECENT STATISTICS ON THE NUMBER OF INCIDENTS, TYPES OF AIRCRAFT AND WEAPONS AS WELL AS COMPOSITE PROFILES OF SKYJACKERS. A RESEARCHER, ON THE BASIS OF TWENTY INTERVIEWS WITH CONVICTED SKYJACKERS, CHARACTERIZED THE AMERICAN OFFENDER AS A WHITE, NATIVE BORN MALE, 29 YEARS OLD, WHO IS CONSERVATIVE IN DRESS, IDEAS AND CUSTOMS. THE REPORT ALSO REVIEWS THE LEGAL ASPECTS, BOTH NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL, RELATED TO THE CRIME. AN EXAMINATION OF THE SKY MARSHALL PROGRAM, PRE-BOARDING SCREENING AND ELECTRONIC DETECTION DEVICES HAS SHOWN THAT EXTENSIVE GROUND SECURITY IS THE MOST EFFECTIVE PREVENTIVE MEASURE. A PRE-FLIGHT SECURITY PROGRAM SHOULD INCLUDE A WEAPONS DETECTION TEST, PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILE OF SKYJACKERS TO ALERT AIRLINE PERSONNEL TO POSSIBLE SKYJACKERS, AND A BODY AND LUGGAGE SEARCH. THE TEXT IS COMPLIMENTED BY GRAPHS AND ILLUSTRATIONS PERTINENT TO AIR PIRACY. THE APPENDICES INCLUDE AN EXTENSIVE BIBLIOGRAPHY.
