This article presents a design accountability checklist which incorporates additional design issues found during the Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design project in Broward County, Fla.
Abstract
The checklist, intended for use during a site walk-through, is a modified and expanded version of a checklist developed by John Ziesel in 'Stopping School Property Damage.' It can be used by school administrators to evaluate school design features in order to determine when the physical environment should be modified to minimize school property damage and to increase physical security. Contained in the checklist are 16 sections in the following major categories: (1) outdoor areas, (2) structural characteristics, and (3) indoor areas. Each section is divided into general questions followed by specific statements requiring a positive or a negative response. The outdoor section surveys parking lots, bus loading zones, gathering and play areas, and walkways and landscaping. Structural characteristics include entrances, windows, walls, rooftops, and fixtures. Corridors, stairwells, gathering areas, walls, fixtures, and assemblies are reviewed in the section on indoor areas.
