DESCRIPTION OF THE PROCESS USED BY A MULTIDISCIPLINARY TEAM IN 1969 TO PLAN THE MANITOBA YOUTH CENTER.
Abstract
REPRESENTATIVES OF PERSONS INVOLVED IN THE ADMINISTRATION OF POLICY, PHYSICAL PLANNING, PROGRAM PLANNING AND PUBLIC WORKS, AS WELL AS THE ACTUAL PERSONS WHO WOULD RUN THE NEW FACILITY, MADE UP THIS TEAM. THE OBJECT WAS TO AVOID HAVING THE NEW - BUILT FACILITY TURN OUT TO BE EITHER INAPPROPRIATE OR OBSOLETE UPON COMPLETION. THE PROCESS OF DESIGNING A CORRECTIONAL FACILITY BY SYNTHESIZING CORRECTIONAL PROGRAMMING AND FACILITY DESIGN IN CONSULTATION WITH THE USERS COMBINES EXPERIENCE AND THEORY. SINCE THE ARCHITECT WORKS FROM THE TEAM REPORT, BUIDLING DESIGN EVOLVES AS A FUNCTION OF PROGRAM DEFINITION. SPACE REQUIREMENTS, PROGRAM INTEGRATION, FLEXIBILITY AND POTENTIAL FOR CHANGE WERE AMONG THE FACTORS CONSIDERED FOR THE DESIGN OF THE NANITOBA JUVENILE FACILITY. FOUR DIAGRAMS SHOW DIFFERENT FEATURES OF THE FINAL PLANS.
