Abstract
The introductory chapter reviews the history and current status of the office of Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court. National agencies of Federal judicial administration include the Chief Justice of the U.S., the Judicial Conference of the United States, the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, the Federal Judicial Center, the U.S. Sentencing Commission, and the National Judicial Council of State and Federal Courts; regional agencies include circuit judicial council, chief circuit judges, circuit executives, and State- Federal judicial councils. Subsequent chapters cover the structures of district court governance, and district court personnel and related agencies. The Chief District Judge's management and administrative function include activities of other district judges, personnel policies and management, training programs, equipment and services, facilities, court security, statistical reporting, budgets, and external relations. The final section examines responsibilities and options regarding the Chief District Judge and case management. 1 appendix
