The proposed research design is intended to determine whether the PM analyzer can provide evidence that voice frequency, syllabic duration, and amplitude are related to deception when correlated with verified polygraph results.
Abstract
The PM analyzer is a microprocessor controlled device that automatically accommodates sudden and frequent shifts in pitch so as to provide an accurate display of the frequency curve. The proposed research method is to acquire 50 tape-recorded, verified forensic polygraph examinations. The tapes will be examined by a certified voice analysis expert. Using the PM analyzer, the raw data will be compiled and then disseminated to 15 voice experts to review and submit opinions about whether or not the subjects are truthful. Statistical analysis of their findings and the PM analyzer data will be conducted using the polygraph verified charts on the Backster scale as a control. In addition to a PM analyzer and a two-channel strip chart recorder required to analyze the tape recordings, a cassette recorder and chart paper will be required for copying and speed adjusting the tape recordings. The research will take 11 to 12 months. An itemized research budget is provided, totaling $9,894. Twenty-nine references are listed.
