DISCUSSION OF THE RESULTS OF A STUDY OF 105 NEW YORK CITY DETECTIVES, WHICH WAS DESIGNED TO IDENTIFY PERFORMANCE-RELATED PERSONALITY TRAITS OF SUCCESSFUL DETECTIVES.
Abstract
THE PERSONALITY RESEARCH FORM, A 300-ITEM TRUE-AND-FALSE TYPE QUESTIONNAIRE, WAS USED. TEST RESULTS SHOWED THE DETECTIVE PROFILE TO BE SUPERIOR TO THAT OF THE AVERAGE COLLEGE STUDENT WITH DETECTIVES SCORING ABOVE THE NORM IN NINE OF FOURTEEN PERSONALITY CHARACTERISTICS, SUCH AS ENDURANCE, HARM AVOIDANCE, ORDER, ACHIEVEMENT, AND DOMINANCE. THEY SCORED BELOW THE AVERAGE IN IMPULSIVITY, PLAY, SOCIAL RECOGNITION, AGGRESSION, AND AUTONOMY. THE EFFECT OF EDUCATIONAL DIFFERENCES, SENIORITY, AND AGE ARE CONSIDERED. THE AUTHOR POINTS OUT THAT DETECTIVE PROFILE PROJECTS A IMAGE VERY DIFFERENT FROM THE POPULAR STEREOTYPE.
